i can't decide

I need to update my camera, and after alot of thought and research im torn between the canon 450d and the 40d.
I know the Canon 40d would be the best camera to get...but i still feel as though the 450d would be a good option....im wondering what the difference is with quality etc......the price is definately different, im so stuck deciding!
